His "mother" gives him some rice treats(Kibidango) to help his journey. He uses the dango to befriend a bird, a dog, and a monkey who help him on his quest. They defeat ogres and then go home. Significance to design: Outfit has a heavy peach influence to the design Part of the design has an illustration of his 3 friends His belt(? ) is a string of Kibidango His SP skill introduces his spirit friends(they don't die in the original folklore) and it hits 4 times, which may be alluding to Momo + his 3 friends. Kintaro（金太郎） Origin: Kintaro Synopsis: Born with strength, gets an axe from mom, uses it to cut down a tree to save animals who then make an oath to be his servants. He is then scouted by a warrior from the capital and leaves home to become a warrior. Significance to design: His weapon is an axe His skills/specials being a multiplier to his attack is very fitting This one is tricky. In almost all depictions of Kintaro, he is wearing what looks like a bib that doesn't cover his arms and legs. Our Kintaro is only covered (with the exception of his privates) the exact opposite The trademark 金(Kin) is written on his hip coattail Karen（赤いくつ: Akai Kutsu） Origin: The Red Shoes Synopsis: Karen is born poor, mom dies and rich lady adopts her. She gets pretty red shoes she wears everywhere including church, eventually god punishes her and she is forced to dance stuck in her shoes forever. Eventually she asks a woodcutter to chop her feet off and becomes a nun, once god forgives her she is immediately sent to heaven. Significance to design: Red shoes and nonstop shuffle dancing. Party outfit may be alluding to the dance she went to with the shoes where she begins her journey of nonstop dancing until her feet are chopped off. Aladdin（アラジン） Origin: Aladdin Synopsis: I can show you the world. Aladdin finds a magic lamp, genie helps him get the girl but dark mage takes the lamp and steals the girl but Aladdin gets the help of Ring Genie & Co. to get her back. Happily ever after. Significance to design: Genie Lamp is a gun Middle-Eastern/Arabian outfit motif Sinbad（シンドバッド） Origin: Sinbad the Sailor Synopsis: Sinbad is a sailor who adventures. There are seven different voyages, Sinbad starting poor and finding his way to fame in fortune through adventure. Significance to design: His outfit has a pirate/sailor motif His magic usage may be a reference to his adventures encountering monsters and magic The bird that carries him is likely a "Roc", which he encounters in his 2nd voyage His weapon may be the golden staff he attains in the 7th and final voyage Ring Genie（指輪の魔人: Yubiwa no Majin） Origin: Aladdin Synopsis: Ring Genie is the second genie Aladdin seeks help from to save Jasmine Badroulbadour from the evil dude. He is the ex machina magic carpet. Significance to design: Unknown His skill to "accelerate" can be a reference to how Aladdin is 'rush' transported within the story. Urashima Taro（浦島太郎） Origin: Urashima Taro Synopsis: Fisherman saves bullied turtle. Turtle takes fisherman to underwater paradise as a thanks. Fisherman is given box upon departure, told not to "open the box". He opens box. He goes from boy to old man within moments. The end. Significance to design: The turtle The engine powering his turtle seems to be a box, it may be the "Tamate Bako" that makes him old His old looks despite his youthful voice is likely a reference to his demise He is a fisherman Cinderella（シンデレラ） Origin: Cinderella Synopsis: Abused by her in-laws, a fairy god mother makes her pretty and takes her to a ball where she gets the prince boy to fall in love with her and leaves a glass shoe that fits her and her only as a clue for him to find her after the magic is gone. I probably don't need to write much more, you've all seen the disney movies. Significance to design: Her motorcycle upon close look is actually a pumpkin carriage Her boots are also made of "glass-looking" material Her main trait of "being in a hurry" may allude to her time limit in story Fairy Godmother（カボチャの魔女: Kabocha no Majo） Origin: Cinderella Synopsis: Appears in the story of Cinderella and casts a temporary spell that makes her superficially beautiful and rich looking. Significance to design: The pumpkin chariot(? ) she rides on has a heavy motif on the pumpkins that come up in the story The relation she has with Cinderella (though it's repurposed) Little Match Girl（マッチ売りの少女: Macchi Uri no Shoujo） Origin: The Little Match Girl Synopsis: There is a poor little girl in the streets on New Year's Eve selling matches while barefoot in the snow. Out of survival instinct, she lights the matches one by one to keep her warm. After a while she begins to see visions of warmth, family, and her grandmother. By the time all matches have been spent, she dies on the streets/ Significance to design: Her matches are probably the most explicit reference to the story. Outside of that her adolescent looks may also be a reference to how young she is in the story. Bear（クマ: Kuma） Origin: Kintaro Synopsis: Bear teaches Kintaro how to wrestle/is defeated and pledges allegiance to Kintaro Significance to design: He shares a similar outfit to Kintaro. He is a bear. Otohime（乙姫） Origin: Urashima Taro Synopsis: Otohime is the lady in the underwater palace that greets Urashima Taro and treats him to a good time. She is also the culprit that gave him the Tamate Bako box that makes him age. Significance to design: Her attacks are likely "Tamate Bako" boxes Slowing attacks may be a reference to how they made Taro age Her outfit features a marine theme She follows the Amanto look, which she is commonly depicted in female deities/demi-folk Wicked Queen（鏡の魔女: Kagami no Majo） Origin: Snow White Synopsis: Wicked Queen is obsessed with the mirror and who the fairest of them all is. She attempts to kill her step child in an attempt to stay the fairest. She fails and is later forced to dance to death in shoes made of fiery metal. Significance to design: She has a giant mirror. The mirror also has apple growing out of it, likely a reference to the poisonous apples she uses to attempt taking Snow White's life. Snow White（白雪姫: Shirayuki Hime） Origin: Snow White Synopsis: Snow White is born. After an attempt on her life she runs and finds home with a bunch of dwarves. She gets poisoned by an apple but revives and lives happily ever after with a prince that saves her. Significance to design: Seven Dwarves are included in her kit She carries an apple Her design is somewhat reminiscent to that of Disney's portrayal of Snow White. Sleeping Beauty（眠り姫: Nemuri Hime） Origin: Sleeping Beauty (Briar Patch Rose) Synopsis: Evil Fairy curses girl to forever sleep. She sleeps surrounded by a wall of thorny thornbushes. She gets woken up by a prince's kiss. yay happy ever after Significance to design: She is literally sleeping in a bed of throny thornbushes Her skills, SP and basic attacks feature the briar vines Less well known is the original title of Sleeping Beauty, which is Briar Patch Rose. The roses in her design are likely a reference to that name. Princess Kaguya（かぐや姫: Kaguya Hime） Origin: Taketori Monogatari, or Kaguya Hime Synopsis: Old man finds shiny bamboo. He cuts it and finds a baby girl in it. She goes from baby to lady in 3 months, and she gets many suitors. She requires a special item to accept them as a husband, but they all fail. She eventually begins to cry as Izayoi(roughly 8~9/16) creeps closer, and tells her adopted parents she must go back to the moon. Many try to stop the abduction of Kaguya from the moonsfolk, but once the day comes they can't move because they're so shiny and she leaves with them. Significance to design: Kaguya's SP features a UFO, a reference to her people Her staff(mallet? ) is a moon She is wearing an adaptation of the Juunihitoe, which she is said to have been wearing in her adulthood in the story Not necessarily relevant, but she also rocks the hairstyle from the Heiann Period called Furiwake and Amasogi. It refers to the layered cuts in the hair by the cheekbone. Monkey King（孫悟空: Songoku） Origin: Journey to the West Synopsis: Songoku was born from a rock splitting in the mountains, but his mischevious acts lead him to be controlled by a monk(with a headband called Kinkoji) who he accompanies later on in a voyage. Angry witch mom fools the guy and he drops and gets blinded but finds Rapunzel somewhere who has given birth to twins and her tears fix his eyes because you know, when you cry those tears go into the eyeballs of another. Significance to design: Long locks of hair, tower vehicle with a locked door + thematic tower top hat. Miminashi Hoichi（耳なし芳一） Origin: Miminashi Hoichi Synopsis: Hoichi is a monk that was blind from birth. One day as he was practicing the Biwa(A lute), he hears someone asking him to play for him. His brother monk sees that he is being "haunted" by a ghost. The head monk then writes prayer all over Hoichi's body, and tells him not to say a word that night even if he hears the ghost. Hoichi follows the instructions, but the head monk misses writing prayer on his ears. That night, the ghost comes to take Hoichi but cannot see any part of him but his ears. Hoichi's ears are then taken by the ghost, but is then afterward regarded as Hoichi the skilled lute player without ears(Miminashi means no ears). Significance to design: Sunglasses signify his blindness, and his outfit is very monk themed. His 'guitar' is also designed like a hybrid between a guitar and a biwa lute, and the ghosts are likely a reference to the ghost he attracts in the folktale. Some are more detailed than others because I'm stupid lazy sometimes; feel free to chime in if you have more to say and I'll edit it in with credits!

One of Studio Ghibli's last feature films before the legendary animation studio went on an indefinite break, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is Isao Takahata's first picture in over 15 years and happens to be an eloquently narrated, gorgeously animated & patiently paced cinema that attempts to bring on screen one of the oldest tales in Japanese folklore.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya tells the story of its titular character who was found in a bamboo shoot by a bamboo cutter who, believing her to be a divine presence, brings her home to his wife. Although this mysterious tiny girl grows rapidly into a young lady, dazzling all who encounters her, she eventually is left with no alternative but to confront her own fate.
Co-written & directed by Isao Takahata (best known for Grave of the Fireflies) this tale is crafted with precision care & elegance plus how all of it is animated brings an artistic vibe of its own. The use of colour palette, sketch-like animation & minimalist approach leaves a lasting impression, the voice performances are spot-on while Joe Hisaishi's score nicely compliments the whole narrative.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya also covers the various restraints women find themselves in every facet of life, no matter what society they happen to be part of, and exposes that without preaching. However, its 137 minutes of runtime feels a tad too long, the final act is stretched, and although its creativity is undeniably impressive, the whole story kind of lacks that immersive element, much like Takahata's earlier works.
On an overall scale, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya brims with some truly astonishing images and is another winning marvel from the acclaimed studio. It's aesthetically pleasing, artistically fulfilling & emotionally gripping and there are going to be many who will have nothing but endless praise for the manner in which this ancient Japanese folklore is illustrated on the film canvas. As for me, I do admire a number of things about Takahata's latest but don't feel any love for it. Still, I've no qualms in recommending it to anyone for it is worthy of a broader audience.

Who cut the onions. My favorite film. I saw it with my dad at a specialty theater in Chicago. My dad basically never cries, so I was shocked when at the end he was bawling his eyes out. He cried for five minutes straight and then hugged me tight and told me he loved me. To me the story expresses not only the importance of living the life you want to lead rather than the one expected of you, but also to cherish our time on Earth, for, despite hardship, there is beauty and love all around us. A remarkable achievement by filmmaker Alla Kovgan, spending seven years to make this classic tribute to the late dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham.
Working with both archive footage and valuable sound recordings, she conjures up the avant-garde artist through recordings of his work, his philosophy of his art and comments by many close collaborators including notably John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Not meant as a biopic, film concentrates on spectacularlhy cinematic (in 3-D) new performances of many of his dances, executed by members of his company, which disbanded in 2011, after Merce's death in 2009.
At a q&a following the screening, Kovgan indicated that Wim Wenders' innovative 2011 3-D dance film about German choreographer Pina Bausch inspired her to take on this formidable project, finally starting shooting in Stuttgart in 2015 with principal photography taking place in 2018.
Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.

  • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

 

  • On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

 

  • First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.


Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

October 8, 2019 9:50PM PT New York's rare book dealers discuss what they did for love in a wistful doc made for those who can still look at a book and see a magical object. Its never a surprise to learn that the Internet has upended a business, or an entire industry. But in the lovely and wistful documentary “ The Booksellers, ” we hear one telling illustration of how the online universe has revolutionized the world of vintage books, and its an object lesson so fraught with irony that its a little head-spinning. Imagine that it was, say, the early 90s, and you were a rare-book maven with an impassioned, if not obsessive-compulsive, desire to accumulate a complete collection of the works of Edith Wharton, all in first editions. (Since Edith Wharton happens to be my favorite writer, this example nabbed my attention. How would you do it? Youd go to vintage bookstores, attend auctions, work with a dealer. Youd gather your first editions one by one, over time, and the slow and steady hunt would be part of the pleasure. But in the world of online book selling, where everything is catalogued and digitized, its all potentially a lot simpler. You can still play treasure hunt if youd like, but all you really have to do is say, “Id like to own a first-edition copy of every book Edith Wharton ever wrote, ” and the computer does the searching for you, all at once. To gather this collection, all youd have to be ready to do is to put the total sum on your credit card. In a sense, thats exhilarating. In rare books, as in so many other things, the Internet can reduce the search for the Holy Grail to an instant click-and-score. But with the hunt made borderline irrelevant, youre no longer quite collecting; youre just buying. The thrill may not be gone, but its reduced. And for the vintage book-store owner — the professional bibliophile, the man or woman who knows theyre buying and selling not just old books but sacred artifacts — the impact of Internet commerce has been a slow-motion debacle. The web turns them, more and more, into not-so-necessary middlemen. Of course, what the Internet is also doing is accelerating, rather radically, the erosion of our collective passion for book culture. Its not as if its gone away! But when it comes to feeding the book business as a business, the number of people who spend time reading things between covers is in a rapid state of decline. Yet if the rare-book trade has reached a crucial moment of struggle, “The Booksellers” reveals that its hanging on in novel ways. The present-tense sheen of the 21st century has altered the meaning, and place, of books in our society in ways that can make them seem even more valuable. You might say that vintage books are now like vinyl albums — but in this case, they always were. So for the vintage-book believer, the value of a volume has actually gone up: as totem, as symbol, as artifact of beauty. Its slow fade from the culture only enhances its magic as an object. “The Booksellers” invites us to dote on the tactile mystery of old books — the elegance of the print, the pages that may be fragmenting, the colorful latticework bindings, the back-breaking size of certain old volumes, like the Gutenberg Bible (more or less the first book ever printed, dating back to the mid-1400s) or one giant book we see that contains intricate drawings of fish skeletons. D. W. Young, the director of “The Booksellers, ” is a veteran film editor who leads us into grand and cozy old bookstores like the mysterious museums they are. He roots the movie in New York City (with a few forays to London) since thats where the heart of American literary culture still resides, and he introduces us to a cast of characters who are captivating in their what-I-did-for-love devotion. They all have it; if they didnt, they wouldnt be in the business. Many of the stores go back to the 20s, when 4th Ave., known as book row in Manhattan, had close to 50 bookstores, most of them owned and operated, in the words of Fran Lebowitz, by “dusty Jewish men who would get irritated if you wanted to buy a book. ” That, says Lebowitz, is because theyd gone into the business mostly so they could sit around and read all day. The film takes us inside New Yorks most fabled bookshop, the Argosy Book Store, founded in 1925 by Louis Cohen and now run by his daughters, Judith, Naomi, and Adina, who are in the rare position of being able to keep the dream alive because they own the six-story building that houses the store on E. 59th St. The dance of literary aesthetics and money is addictive. In the 50s and 60s, dust jackets were considered works of art, until they fell out of favor. Now theyre back in fashion, to the point that a first edition of “The Great Gatsby” without a dust jacket is currently worth about 5, 000, whereas with a torn and tattered jacket it would fetch 15, 000, and with a jacket in vintage condition it could go for 150, 000. At the Antiquarian Book Fair held each year at the Park Avenue Armory, we see an original edition of “Don Quixote, ” which is worth 20, 000, and learn that a first edition of the original James Bond novel, “Casino Royale, ” now goes for 150, 000. The comparison to the art market is there in a primal way, even if the book prices are lower (though we do see the auction at which Bill Gates, over the phone, purchased Leonardos Codex Hammer for 28 million) with the cost of a vintage book reflecting the ever-shifting values of the culture. “The Booksellers” finds room for tidbits of history, like a thumbnail sketch of the pioneering book maven A. S. Rosenbach, as well as a portrait of the seminal dealer-collectors Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern, who had to fight to make their mark in a demimonde of tweedy men. (For years, they were scandalously denied membership in the Grolier Club. Rostenberg and Stern became legendary, uncovering Louisa May Alcotts hidden pseudonym as an author of pulp novels, and opening the doors for the contemporary women dealers we meet, like Rebecca Romney, who became a regular on “Pawn Stars, ” spreading the gospel of rare-book love with a rare crossover charisma. She emerges as the movies cockeyed optimist of bibliophilia. Theres a happy contradiction at the heart of antiquarian book culture. The passion for books is about the love of reading — the rhythm of it, the meditative space of it, which increasingly stands as a 19th-century counterpulse to the amped heartbeat of the 21st century. But “The Booksellers” is also about the kind of people who relish vintage books as fetish objects. Those of us who love old books know that feeling. Yet its not just about owning; that gorgeous rare volume incarnates the concrete mysticism of the reading experience. “The Booksellers” is a documentary for anyone who can still look at a book and see a dream, a magic teleportation device, an object that contains the world.

Counterintuitively then, Underland is full of color. Its exploration of the spaces below ground, their natural and cultural history and the intersection of the two, is stunningly gorgeous and mesmerizing.
